Lions Defense Could Get Major Boost with Anzalone’s Potential Return

Update: As of 4:00 PM on Saturday, per Detroit Lions on Twitter, Alex Anzalone has been removed from injured reserve. There are currently no updates on official game status.

The Detroit Lions’ defense might receive a significant reinforcement ahead of their crucial Week 18 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, as linebacker Alex Anzalone could return from a broken forearm that has sidelined him since Week 11. The team captain’s potential return comes at a critical time for a defense that has been decimated by injuries throughout the season.

Anzalone, who recorded 56 tackles (seven for loss) and a sack in just nine games before his injury, has been practicing this week with a carbon fiber and padded cast on his forearm. While head coach Dan Campbell remains cautious about rushing his return, the impact of getting their defensive signal-caller back could be substantial. His leadership and production were key factors in the Lions’ strong defensive start to the season.

In Anzalone’s absence, second-year linebacker Jack Campbell has admirably stepped into a leadership role, accumulating 125 total tackles and 5 pass deflections this season. Despite dealing with recent rib soreness, Campbell returned to full practice Thursday after playing every defensive snap in Monday’s game against the 49ers. However, the Lions’ defense has struggled in recent weeks, making Anzalone’s veteran presence and playmaking ability particularly valuable for their playoff push.

The decision to activate Anzalone isn’t straightforward. While Sunday’s game will determine the NFC’s top seed, the Lions must balance the immediate need with playoff preparation. Head coach Dan Campbell noted they typically prefer giving returning players a week of practice before game action, but the stakes of this matchup might force their hand.

With thirteen defensive players currently on injured reserve, Anzalone’s return could be as impactful as regaining star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who continues rehabilitating from a broken tibia and fibula suffered in Week 6 against Dallas. While Hutchinson has vowed to return if the Lions reach the Super Bowl on February 9th, Anzalone’s potential immediate return could provide both tactical and emotional lift to a unit that has relied heavily on their offense to maintain their impressive 14-2 record. The question remains: will the Lions risk playing their defensive captain this week, or save him for their playoff run?
