Future Development
Sony VP Hiromi Wakai has confirmed new features are in development for the PlayStation Portal, though specific details weren’t revealed. The most recent major update came in November 2024, when cloud gaming support was added, enabling users to play games without requiring a PS5. This feature currently provides access to 120 titles from the PS Plus Premium catalog in its beta phase.
Development History
Wakai revealed that cloud gaming capabilities were planned since early development but were intentionally delayed to ensure quality. The feature’s implementation was partially driven by user feedback following the Portal’s initial release, which only offered PS5 game streaming from home consoles.

Market Performance
Sales data indicates strong market performance, with approximately 3% of PS5 owners purchasing the Portal. This translates to roughly 650,000 units sold in the U.S. within the first 10 months since its November 15, 2023 launch.
Future Hardware Plans
According to a Bloomberg report, Sony is developing a new standalone handheld device capable of playing PS5 games, similar to the PS Vita. This new device could potentially replace the Portal in Sony’s hardware lineup.
