I’ve been collecting Pokemon cards since before I could read, and I quickly became obsessed with collecting every Gardevoir variant I could find. What I mean to say is that I’ve seen my fair share of set releases. But this Prismatic Evolutions launch? It’s giving me serious flashbacks to the pandemic scalping nightmare.
The Pokemon Company just admitted they screwed up – again. The new set’s supposed to drop January 17, and what a surprise, there aren’t enough boxes to go around. They’re supposedly working at maximum capacity to print more, but we’ve heard that one before.

I should be excited about this set. It’s all about Eevee and its evolutions, with some killer artwork in those Illustration Rares. These Eevee sets are always gorgeous and pricy – just look back at Evolving Skies (or Evolving Cries as I called it, never getting that coveted Moonbreon). So, instead of hyping up these beautiful cards, I’m watching scalpers mark up pre-orders to ridiculous prices. Some stores haven’t even gotten half their expected stock.
At least they’re promising reprints this time. Journey Together’s coming in March too, so maybe that’ll take some pressure off. But man, I’m tired of this dance. Remember when you could just walk into a store and buy Pokemon cards? These days you need a discord alert system and a prayer.
The worst part is they’re acting like this is just because of “high demand.” Sure, people want the cards – we always do. But let’s be real: scalpers are once again snatching up everything before actual collectors and players can even click “add to cart.”
I’ll probably still grab some packs when they hit my local game store. Those Special Illustration Rares are too pretty to pass up. But I’m past the days of paying triple MSRP on eBay – this isn’t Magic the Gathering!
I guess I’ll be refreshing Pokemon Center’s website at midnight like everyone else. Arceus-speed folks.
